Mid-Atlantic Popup Camper Enthusiasts First Campout

The Mid-Atlantic Popup Camper Enthusiasts (MAPCE) held their first group campout on the weekend of October 8, 1999, at the Front Royal, Virginia KOA. Eight families participated in this rainy, but fun campout.

MAPCE is a group of popup camping families who met on the 'Net, mostly in the alt.rv.pop-up-trailers Usenet newsgroup. We plan to get together at least several times each season. Anyone may join our eGroup by clicking here and following the group's plans and activities via email.

Our pot luck dinner on Saturday night was a huge success. We shared Brunswick Stew, Chicken and Rice, Grilled Salmon, Chili, Dirty Rice and a bunch of other great food that I can't remember right now. My wife is still talking about Dale's pineapple pies. By this time, the rain clouds rolled in and light showers had started. It rained on and off, heavy at times, through Sunday evening. If you look carefully, you can see the plastic rain tarp that we put up to provide a dry dining area. Designing and building the tarp was the ultimate "male bonding/team building" exercise. (For a nominal fee, we can come to your company or place of business and conduct the Tarp Building Seminar. Dilbert would be proud.)

After the pot luck dinner, we settled back for some beer, mudslides (the drinkable kind) and conversation...

...while the kids enjoyed roasted marshmallows and s'mores by the fire.

This is what our campsite looked like on Sunday after the rain stopped. Most of the group camped in the "popup" sites back in the wooded loops. We camped with the Gilberts in the "big camper zone" by the pool because our trailers were too big to fit in the smaller wooded sites. Several members experienced difficulty getting situated in some of the wooded sites due to trees or the small size of the campsite.
