We left Vienna, Virginia for Salter Path Family Campground in North Carolina on June 23, right after school was dismissed for the summer. Our first stop was the KOA at Enfield/Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The Enfield KOA was a great stopping point and we had a couple of hours of family fun in the pool after we arrived and set up. The next day, we finished the trip to Salter Path, North Carolina.

Salter Path Family Campground was good, but for me probably not worth the extra time over our usual beach trip to the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. We stayed in the shady area of the campground (Site 20), oceanside. Our bath house smelled like 1000 five year old boys with bad aim had visited it in the previous 24 hours. Their beach has suffered some storm related erosion problems and there's not much left, but what was there was nice. The surf was calm and reasonable for the first few days, but kicked up to the point that ocean swimming was dangerous for small kids later in our stay. My 11 year old son got caught in a rip current with his boogie board - he was never in serious danger but could not get back in to shore no matter how hard he tried. I had to swim out and get him. We logged a lot of time at the swimming pool, mini golf and go carts after the surf conditions deteriorated. I ate a lot of really good fresh seafood. I picked up a Windglider before we left and had some fun zipping around Bouge Sound before I managed to fall on the sail and snap the mast. I had the kayak kit though and we still had some fun with it in "kayak mode".

On July 1st we left Salter Path and traveled to James Island County Park in Charleston, SC for a one night stand. This is a great park and campground and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting the Charleston area. The activity room has a table with a phone jack for laptop users! There's also a waterfun park that we didn't get to use. A very clean campground with paved roads and spacious, level sites.

On July 2 we left Charleston
for Perry, Florida where we camped in my brother-in-law's backyard. This
was a lot of fun - he has 20 acres in a very rural area. The kids loved
it. We were there to attend a surprise party for
my wife's other brother's 25th wedding anniversary.
In the last five minutes of the trip, we almost nailed an large armadillo
at 55 MPH. Lucky for it and us, I was able to miss it by about a foot.

On July 5th we left Perry with a planned stop in Macon, GA to visit more family. We had planned to stay at Claystone Park in Macon but after an Olive Garden dinner took over an hour to arrive (everyone got $15 gift certificates for that) we decided to stay in Uncle Don's backyard for this one-nighter. Sorry, no picture of this one.
On July 6th we left Macon for home with a planned stop at the Selma, NC KOA to break up the trip. Their swimming pool was out of service so we drove another 1/2 hour north on I-95 and set up camp at the Rock Ridge Campground in Simms, NC. We had a great meal at the local Cracker Barrel and logged quite a bit of time in the pool at Rock Ridge that evening and the next day. It's a "nice, quiet place" (apparently their trademark) and I had a nice chat with the owner.
